The Superpower of a Weighted Blanket

Hugs make you feel good because they affect the entire body to such an extent that many scientists claim it is equivalent to the effect of many different drugs operating on the body simultaneously. This is the same effect that is provided by weighted blankets. The gentle pressure applied to the body encourages the same serotonin production, which lifts your mood and relaxes the body.

According to Temple Grandin, Ph.D., “Deep touch pressure is the type of surface pressure that is exerted in most types of firm touching, holding, stroking, petting of animals, or swaddling. [sic] Occupational therapists have observed that a very light touch alerts the nervous system, but deep pressure is relaxing and calming.”

You many not know but weighted blankets and vests have been around as a therapy tool for a while now. With many parents observing the calming effects they can have on their children. The science behind these weighted items is called Deep Touch Pressure (DTP). This is the term for the feeling of gentle, distributed weight on the body. Children, teens and even adults can benefit from using a weighted blanket and they are a  safe and effective non-drug therapy

Weighted items such as: blankets, vests, stuffed animals, or lap pads are many ways one can benefit from DTP. It is very common these days to see schools using these tools as part of a child’s behavior plan to calm them down during  transitions in class lessons, assemblies and even to and from school on the bus. At home weighted blankets help by covering the whole body for sleep, wrapping around shoulders providing relief during tantrums and comfort when faced with high-anxiety situation like going to the dentist.
