Story time at Rideau Hall 

Looking for a free, fun activity to do with the kids this summer? Come and enjoy Storytime at Rideau Hall! From June 30 to August 26, this outdoor reading activity is hosted in collaboration with Frontier College, a Canadian charitable literacy organization.Every Friday and Saturday, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Frontier College volunteers invite the general public, families and youth groups to settle in under the Reading Tent to read books and to participate in fun literacy activities. While you are at Rideau Hall, take in the sights and visit for the whole day! We have a wide array of free activities offered on-site during the summer:

  • Stop by the Visitor Centre and learn more about the history of Rideau Hall.
  • Enjoy the play structure and explore the grounds at your leisure.
  • Have a picnic! Bring your own lunch and blanket and settle in under a tree or at one of our picnic tables.
  • Witness the pageantry and colour of the Ceremonial Guard during the hourly Relief of the Sentries.
  • Explore the official residence of the Governor General with our guides and discover the historic treasures in the public rooms by playing our Search + Discover game!

As a nod to Canada’s amazing diversity we are making a special effort to ensure that more Canadian makers are represented, including marginalized groups and First Nations artists. We have curated an amazing collection of vendors that are showing off the Canadian Maker Movement at its best. Gatineau’s wonders of the sand festival invites you to come and admire the work of some of the best sand sculptors in the country as they showcase incredible structures, all inspired by this year theme, “Raiders of the Lost Lake”. Take advantage of this premiere summer gathering by participating in one of the different activities offered over the weekend at Lake Beauchamp: Family and Amateur sand-sculpting challenge, workshops and games, inflatable structures, swimming and, let’s not forget, the water segment “Grand Splash”: The Aquazone (inflatable structures course on water), the Aquazoo, the water races, with the participation of the “Crazy Races”, and the “Grand Mouillage”, a gigantic watergun battle for the whole family!

An impressive 19th century Gothic Revival farm house, Fairfields Heritage House represents the homestead and community building legacy of the Bell family. Originally built on 660 acres of farm land, the museum tells the epic story of almost 200 years of rich, local history and the people who so actively helped shape the evolution of the area. Beautiful green lawns surround the house and are an invitation to spend leisure time at the site. Recycl’art de Gatineau

Le Centre d’art contemporain de l’Outaouais (CACO) est heureux de pouvoir présenter une seconde édition d’art contemporain basée sur la récupération de matériaux de notre environnement.
En effet, le parc du ruisseau de la Brasserie de Gatineau accueillera une seconde édition de RECYCL’ART de GATINEAU du 18 juillet au 21 août 2016. Au moins 25 artistes présenteront leur œuvre au public en s’inspirant de la vie et de l’œuvre de Jean DALLAIRE, artiste originaire de Hull dont nous allons célébrer le 100e anniversaire de naissance en 2016. Une exposition rétrospective lui sera consacrée à la Galerie Montcalm du 9 juin au 25 août, un documentaire lui sera aussi consacré avec une projection spéciale au Café des 4 Jeudis le 18 juillet et finalement l’exposition de RECYCL’ART de GATINEAU. En outre, durant les fins de semaine de l’exposition, des artistes offriront des ateliers pour initier les jeunes et les amateurs à la création d’œuvres d’art à partir de matériaux récupérés.

Fortissimo: Beating Retreat Ceremony

The Ceremonial Guard performs public duties in Ottawa annually from late June to the end of August.

The public duties of the Ceremonial Guard include:

  • Posting Guards at the residence of His Excellency, the Governor General of Canada;
  • Performing the daily Changing the Guard ceremony on Parliament Hill;
  • Providing daily sentries at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial (suspended for the 2016 season);
  • Guards of Honour for visiting heads of state or other dignitaries;
  • Participating in official public or military functions in the capital;
  • Performing during public concerts or other ceremonies to promote the Canadian Armed Forces.
