March Break Activities in Ottawa

For parents with children in the Ottawa Carleton District School Board and the Ottawa Catholic School Board, March break is quickly approaching. This year it runs from March 11th through March 15th. If your children are anything like ours they’re looking forward to the week, but it leaves parents having to figure out childcare or how to entertain their families. Some of you may be taking a family vacation, and if you are have a great time. For those of you staying put in Ottawa we scouted out some fun options for you. They range from free drop in crafting at local stores, to week long enriching day camps, and everything in between.

No fee events

Several local stores and libraries have activities planned for those needing something for a morning or an afternoon once or twice during the week. These will also appeal to frugally minded folks.

Spaces are limited for these events so be sure to register early.

Mastermind Toys has daily free activities planned at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm for those who are craft inclined. You can craft with Klutz, create a polka dot pet to take home, build a magnet, or even play with slime. There are great things in store for the week. Contact your local Mastermind Toys store for additional details and to sign up your child. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Indigo has free activities scheduled daily for families. You can craft, swap LOL dolls, build with Lego, and play with slime. Paw Patrol and Peppa Pig themed fun is on order for Friday for the younger crowd. Indigo is a great option for families with children aged 3-12. Contact your local store for times and additional details.

Throughout the March Break week the Ottawa Public Library is offering a variety of free drop in and registration required events across the city. Geared to families with children aged 4-12, you can learn about St. Patrick’s Day, build with Lego, craft and so much more. Check their schedule for participating libraries, dates and times.

For the outdoorsy amongst us Ottawa has a variety of beautiful outdoor spaces to explore and have fun in. Snowshoe along the various trails throughout the city, skate on the canal, toboggan with friends. There’s something for everyone.

Cost based events

You can never go wrong by checking out what our local museums have to offer. Explore the Aviation and Space Museum, the Agriculture and Food Museum, the Museum of History, the Museum of Nature, and the War Museum. The children’s museum is always a hit, with a plethora of hands on play based exhibits to capture their attention and imagination. The museums are chock full of interactive exhibits, amazing films and presentations.

Cineplex theatres have a few special movie showings planned for the week. There’s something for the whole family from Paw Patrol to Sleeping Beauty to Spaceballs.

Day Camps

If you’re looking for something for the day, the Shenkman Arts Centre has a parent and child one day art camp. Together with your child you will create a fun little garden character out of wax. You’ll also paint them a special garden pot home. The camp is offered on Monday, March 11th from 9-4 for $60.
